Hallmarks
Hallmarks
Hallmarks are official symbols stamped onto precious metal jewellery and watches to confirm metal purity, authenticity and quality. They provide reassurance that an item has been independently tested and meets strict legal standards. In the UK, hallmarks are one of the most trusted consumer protections in the jewellery industry and have been used for centuries to guarantee precious metal content.
A hallmark is not decorative — it is a legally recognised mark of assurance. Most items made from gold, silver, platinum or palladium above a minimum weight must be hallmarked before they can be sold. This ensures transparency and protects customers when purchasing fine jewellery.
What a UK Hallmark Tells You
A traditional UK hallmark is made up of several distinct symbols, each with a specific meaning:
-
Metal Fineness Mark
This shows the purity of the metal. Common examples include 375 (9ct gold), 750 (18ct gold), 925 (sterling silver) and 950 (platinum or palladium). -
Assay Office Mark
This identifies which official UK Assay Office tested and certified the item. Each Assay Office has its own unique symbol. -
Maker’s or Sponsor’s Mark
This identifies the registered company or individual responsible for submitting the item for hallmarking.
Together, these marks confirm that the item has been independently tested, meets legal standards and can be traced back to its source.
UK Assay Office Hallmarks
There are four official Assay Offices currently operating in the UK:
-
Leopard’s Head – London Assay Office
-
Anchor – Birmingham Assay Office
-
Yorkshire Rose – Sheffield Assay Office
-
Castle – Edinburgh Assay Office
Each mark represents centuries of expertise and independent testing, adding provenance and trust to hallmarked jewellery.
Why Hallmarks Matter
Hallmarks protect buyers by ensuring that precious metal jewellery is exactly as described. They confirm value, authenticity and quality, making them especially important when purchasing fine jewellery, engagement rings, wedding bands or investment pieces. Hallmarked jewellery also holds greater long-term value and is easier to insure, resell or pass down as an heirloom.
