Precious Gemstones
Diamond
Diamond is the only gemstone composed of a single element, carbon, making it the hardest natural material on earth. Formed deep within the earth under extreme pressure and heat, diamonds are prized for their brilliance, durability and timeless appeal. Trace elements can influence colour and crystal structure, giving rise to natural variations. All diamonds offered by Clarindon Jewellers are conflict-free and comply with the Kimberley Process. The majority of black diamonds available globally are heat treated, which may apply to some pieces within our collections.
Emerald
Emerald is the green to greenish-blue variety of beryl, the same mineral family as aquamarine. Valued for its rich colour and natural inclusions, emerald has been treasured for centuries as a symbol of renewal, love and prosperity.
Ruby
Ruby is the most valuable variety of corundum, renowned for its intense red colour caused by trace amounts of chromium. Ranging from vivid red to deep purplish tones, ruby has long been associated with passion and power. Notable ruby sources include Myanmar, Vietnam and regions of the Himalayas.
Sapphire
Sapphire is another variety of corundum and is most commonly recognised for its blue hues, ranging from greenish blue to violet-blue. The term sapphire also includes “fancy sapphires” found in colours such as pink, yellow, green and orange. Sapphire deposits are found in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, Myanmar and Australia. Most sapphires sold globally are heat treated, which may apply to stones within our collections.

Blue John is a rare banded fluorspar found only in Castleton, Derbyshire. Featuring distinctive purple, yellow and white bands, it is one of the world’s rarest minerals and has been worked into jewellery since Roman times.
